Rooted in a rich heritage, Ralph Hertelendy’s winemaking journey began long before his own time. Tracing his family’s ancestry through the Ottoman Empire, he discovered his forebears had been crafting wines for 300 years. The Hertelendy name, steeped in Hungarian nobility, echoes through history– from the storied Hertelendy Castle– to his father’s escape from Europe in 1940. With this storied legacy as his foundation, Ralph’s destiny was all but certain: to revive and redefine the family tradition in the Napa Valley.

As a teenage brewmaster, Ralph conjured up Bavarian lagers that, though initially notorious for their intensity, brought people together and shattered social barriers. The bullied late bloomer discovered his calling, trading beer for wine in 2006. Ralph’s winemaking journey unfolded in his parents’ basement, fueled by self-taught expertise and stints under Casey Flat Ranch and Del Dotto. Defying his father’s doubts, Ralph unleashed Hertelendy Winery in 2013, bankrolling his dream with a loan. The Crystal Springs AVA vineyard became his canvas. Ralph’s Hungarian heritage and Napa’s volcanic terroir inspired bold, elegant wines, silencing skeptics and cementing his reputation.

Rockwell Ridge, Hertelendy Winery’s prized estate vineyard, sits poised on the western slope of the newly established Crystal Springs AVA, just shy of the Howell Mountain border. This singular terroir boasts volcanic ash, tuffaceous rocky soil, red clay, and granite-like subsoil, yielding wines with complex flavors and structures. Receiving extra sunlight hours, Rockwell Ridge achieves optimal ripeness, showcasing dark fruit characteristics. Originally planted in 1993, this 4-acre vineyard was once a neglected jungle but has flourished under Ralph Hertelendy’s care.

Striking a balance between Napa Valley’s signature ripeness and the subtlety of volcanic terroir requires nuanced winemaking. At Hertelendy Vineyards, Ralph employs precise techniques to achieve this duality. Double sorting and manual selection ensured quality, but introducing optical sorting in 2019 revolutionized elegance and silkiness. Defining elegance in Napa Valley wines as intense yet refined, he achieves this through Hungarian oak, adding depth without overpowering. His signature style walks the edge between boldness and finesse, avoiding hollow wines. Each vintage demands adaptability, adjusting tannin levels to the weather’s rhythm. Ralph’s wines exude silky tannins while maintaining full-bodied character, epitomizing Hertelendy’s approach.

In his Cabernet Sauvignons, Ralph seeks balance, not tannin bombs, prioritizing bright acidity and harmony. With a focus on mountain fruit, naturally robust tannins allow for graceful aging over 20-30 years. Blending is an art, with Petit Verdot adding richness, blackberry pie flavors, and toasted brioche notes. Taming the tannic beast requires patience, perfected over years. The result: complex, elegantly balanced Cabernets, showcasing Hertelendy’s mastery of Napa Valley’s terroir, infused with Hungarian flair.

Hertelendy seeks perfection in his Cabernet Francs, eschewing herbaceous wines for more nuanced, fruit-driven flavors. Sourced primarily from Atlas Peak’s volcanic terroir, Hertelendy Vineyards’ Cabernet Franc showcases subtle earthy spices, cola notes, rhubarb, blueberry and herbal hints. Mitigating pyrazines, Ralph blends Bordeaux varieties to achieve this balance. Defying traditional Bordeaux styles, Hertelendy’s Cabernet Franc embodies bolder, fruit-forward flavors.

Ralph injects his infectious personality into every detail. Since 2016, his hilarious behind-the-scenes peeks on social media have humanized Hertelendy Vineyards. Wine labels become mini art galleries: modernized coat of arms, Da Vinci-inspired Chardonnay labels, glow-in-the-dark bottles, and sneaky Easter eggs to boot.  And, get this – Ralph dances Elvis-style at Christmas. His playful vulnerability makes the winery experience an absolute blast.

Ralph is always seeking the next big thing. From augmented reality labels on his upcoming Pinot Noir project to viral release announcements, Ralph is reimagining wine marketing. Drawing inspiration from pop culture icons, he seamlessly merges art, music, and wine. Prioritizing reputation and quality, he vows to maintain his passion project’s intimacy, declaring, “If I want to grow, I’ll start a new brand.” This trailblazing spirit ensures Hertelendy Vineyards will continue to disrupt Napa Valley’s traditional norms, continuing to forge a bold new path for the wine industry.
