Crushin’ It in San Luis Obispo County: The One Book You Need to Read Before Your Next Wine Tasting

By Published On: December 4, 2024

I had the pleasure of reviewing Sean C. Weir’s second edition of “The Mad Crush An Obscure California Vineyard and the Quest to Make One Great Wine,” a poignant memoir that whisks readers away to the 1995 harvest at Saucelito Canyon Vineyard in San Luis Obispo County.

This tale brings together the stories of winemaker Bill Greenough and the author’s own journey. Bill’s life is vividly portrayed, from his upbringing in the gilded halls of Montecito to his eventual discovery of his true calling at the neglected Saucelito Canyon property. As Bill works tirelessly to restore the vineyard to its former glory, his multifaceted personality shines through: he’s a diligent farmer, a philosophical thinker, and a compassionate father figure.

Sean Weir’s personal story is also beautifully intertwined, highlighting the transformative impact of the 1995 harvest on his life. The narrative explores the poignant father-son dynamic between Bill and Sean, adding depth and emotional resonance to the story.

Throughout the book, Weir shares rich anecdotes that bring the harvest to life. His vivid descriptions transport readers to the vineyard, where they can almost smell the ripening grapes and feel the camaraderie among the harvest crew.

Weir also includes engaging side stories about San Luis Obispo County, such as his experiences working at Chamisal Vineyards’ tasting room and the Avila Beach oil disaster that led to the gentrification of a once-hidden paradise. These vignettes bring the region to life, evoking a strong desire to experience its beauty and charm firsthand – and, of course, to sample some of the exceptional wines that make this region so renowned.

Weir’s writing style perfectly captures the essence of winemaking, conveying the labor, love, and dedication that go into crafting exceptional wines. His narrative is both nostalgic and insightful, offering readers a heartfelt tribute to the people and processes behind winemaking. Overall, the memoir is a delightful read that combines engaging storytelling with rich character development. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in the world of wine or simply looking for an entertaining story.
