As the rain drops gently fall upon the rolling vineyards of Santa Clara Valley’s wine country, the Guglielmo family gathers to celebrate the magic of the season. It’s a time-honored tradition that echoes the warmth and love of their Italian heritage.

The story begins with Emilio Guglielmo, who transplanted his love for winemaking from Italy’s Piemonte region to the United States. Despite Prohibition’s challenges, Emilio’s passion persisted, and he continued to craft wine for family and friends. In 1933, his vision flourished, providing quality wines for diverse European families seeking authentic flavors.  Today, Emilio’s legacy thrives under the guidance of his descendants. Gene and George Guglielmo fondly recall family gatherings filled with laughter, traditional Italian songs, and wine’s warmth.

Perched at 400 feet above sea level, Guglielmo Winery’s vineyards thrive in Viticulture Region 2, mirroring St. Helena’s ideal climate and topography. The coastal influence from Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay creates perfect conditions for diverse varieties, with cooling breezes and fog moderating temperature extremes. Warm afternoons and cool nights balance acidity and body, while the neutral pH soil and excellent water retention capacity ensure healthy vines. The vineyards’ gentle slopes enhance airflow and drainage, protecting against frost and supporting a diverse selection of grape varieties.

At Guglielmo Winery, the “house style” is rooted in Italian heritage, emphasizing dry, elegant table wines, particularly dry red wines, as envisioned by founder Emilio  nearly a century ago. Honoring tradition while embracing modernity, the winery balances old-world techniques with innovative winemaking approaches.  While cherishing its heritage, the winery incorporates cutting-edge techniques like oak edition and stabilization processes. Continuous refinement ensures methods align with industry best practices, guaranteeing uncompromising quality and natural purity. Guglielmo Winery’s wines embody the intersection of tradition, innovation and family legacy, crafted with care and dedication to express the authentic spirit of the land.

Guglielmo Winery pioneered the planting of Sagrantino, a rare Italian varietal from Campania, in the Santa Clara Valley in 2013. This bold move showcased the winery’s Italian heritage and introduced a unique wine experience. Sagrantino, meaning “blood” in Italian, thrives in the valley’s diverse climate, paying homage to its Italian roots. Perfectly paired with hearty dishes like lamb, beef and aged cheeses, Sagrantino’s robust character shines.

Carignane planted by Emilio has naturally high acidity and moderate tannins make it an ideal blending companion, enhancing structure without overpowering.  Historically, Carignane played a supporting role in California’s jug wines, but modern winemaking techniques now spotlight its unique characteristics.  In the Belleto Block, ancient vines yield intensely flavored grapes.

Their Grignolino Rosé is a poignant nod to the family’s Italian heritage and Piemonte roots. Grignolino, this rare grape, once widespread in California, now thrives in fewer than 100 acres statewide. Defying trends, the winery’s 1960s-era Grignolino Rosé honors tradition, reflecting a deep connection to the past.  This dry, expressive wine embodies Guglielmo’s philosophy: showcasing natural characteristics without manipulation. Grignolino’s distinctive color and flavor shine through, pairing beautifully with lighter fare, seafood and Mediterranean dishes.

The Santa Clara Valley beckons wine enthusiasts and tourists with its unique blend of history. Over 30 small, family-owned wineries located in the scenic foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range offer intimate wine tastings. Award-winning wines, crafted since the 1980s, showcase the valley’s ideal microclimates.  Accessibility and approachability make this region standout. Visitors explore Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Martin with ease via the Wine Trail Passport Deck, discovering hidden gems and boutique vineyards. Beyond exceptional wines, local attractions, dining and events, such as the Morgan Hill Wine Trolley, Makers Market Pop-Ups and annual festivals like the Mushroom Festival, ensure a well-rounded experience.

The Santa Clara Valley also faces challenges in wine tourism growth, despite its intimate charm and award-winning wines. Rising land costs and modest marketing budgets limit visibility, while awareness remains a significant obstacle. However, initiatives like the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley Association promote the region’s diverse microclimates and heritage.

As the 2024 harvest unfolds, Guglielmo Winery anticipates a stellar vintage despite a slightly smaller crop.  In the Santa Clara Valley, grapes are thriving despite extreme heat causing some sunburn. Crop size may be impacted, but quality remains exceptional, hinting at depth and character in the 2024 wines. Optimism abounds for a standout vintage, shaping up to be a memorable year for Guglielmo Winery.
