Soquel Vineyards is a distinguished winery that exemplifies the artistry and dedication of winemaking, steeped in rich tradition and innovation. Situated in the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains, it crafts exceptional wines that capture the essence of its unique terroir, inviting wine lovers to experience a true taste of the region’s heritage.
Peter and Paul Bargetto, third-generation winemakers, along with their long-time friend Jon Morgan, have transformed their fondest memories—of laughter-filled days spent among the vines and evenings savoring the fruits of their labor—into a thriving career. Their journey is not merely a profession; it’s a heartfelt calling that now extends to Peter’s son, Simone, representing the fourth generation in this storied lineage. Each bottle of wine tells a story, echoing the dedication and love that have been passed down through the years.
The vision for Soquel Vineyards has always been ambitious, beginning with humble roots in a two-car garage. From those modest beginnings, the dream was clear: to cultivate some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The partners, fueled by their passion for winemaking, were determined to create exceptional wines that would reflect the unique terroir of their region.
Building strong relationships with local growers has been pivotal in this journey, particularly in sourcing high-quality fruit for their wines. Initially, they procured grapes from esteemed vineyards such as Martin Ray Vineyard in Saratoga and Meyley Vineyard in Bonny Doon, always with the goal of producing outstanding wine. “Never take shortcuts,” a mantra often echoed by Peter, guided their approach to winemaking. As time passed and the landscape of vineyards changed, they began collaborating with local viticulturist Prudy Foxx. Her expertise in diverse farming practices tailored to each site has been instrumental in enhancing fruit quality.

Viticulture in the Santa Cruz Mountains is defined by its diverse terroir, characterized by varying soil compositions, elevations, and microclimates that significantly influence grape quality. The region features a mix of sandy soils in Corralitos, which yield lower quantities, and heavier clay and sandstone soils that promote greater vigor and intensity in the wines. The cool Mediterranean climate, shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean, allows for a long growing season with significant diurnal temperature variation, essential for preserving acidity in the grapes.
At Soquel Vineyards, the winemaking philosophy is rooted in a deep appreciation for what Mother Nature provides along the California coast, rather than a single defining moment. The wines reflect a blend of old-world characteristics and California style, shaped by the region’s unique climate and terroir. The team strives to create full-bodied, elegant, and age-worthy wines that truly express the essence of their vineyards. While they don’t claim to have reinvented the wheel, Soquel Vineyards focuses on using top-of-the-line French oak barrels and exceptional fruit, allowing the vineyards to shine through in every glass.
The winery has embraced the growing popularity of Cabernet Franc, crafting a wine that appeals to those seeking lower-alcohol reds with distinct character. Its ability to express cool climate characteristics makes it an ideal choice, especially from sites like Pleasant Valley Farms. While Cabernet Franc contributes to diversifying the wine offerings in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it does face challenges, particularly in achieving optimal ripeness before winter rains arrive. Some vintages present difficulties in this regard, while others do not. Although Cabernet Franc may not single-handedly redefine the appellation’s identity, it plays a crucial role in altering perceptions, showcasing that the Santa Cruz Mountains are not solely defined by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. As this grape continues to gain popularity, it reinforces the region’s reputation for producing a broader spectrum of high-quality wines.

Nebbiolo was initially planted in front of the Soquel Vineyards tasting room, but this early gamble did not yield the desired results due to the site’s cooler climate. However, years later, Nebbiolo found success at Lago Lomita Vineyard, where the grape flourishes in a more suitable environment. This variety has proven to be a joy to work with in the cellar, requiring time to age and develop its complex character. The wines exhibit a pronounced mountainous flavor profile, marked by robust tannins and higher acidity due to the stress on the vines growing on steep slopes. These attributes contribute to their remarkable aging potential.

When Soquel Vineyards opened its doors as the 16th winery in the region, the landscape was vastly different; today, there are over 90 wineries and tasting rooms within the appellation, each contributing to a vibrant community. The sense of camaraderie among local wineries is palpable, especially during harvest season when they come together to lend a hand with bins and transportation. This collaborative spirit fosters a strong sense of community, reinforcing the idea that they are all part of a larger team. The relaxed atmosphere at Soquel Vineyards invites guests to enjoy their wine without pretension, treating them like family rather than mere customers. With a focus on showcasing their exceptional Pinot Noirs and offering a personal touch in the tasting room, Soquel Vineyards encourages visitors to explore the diverse offerings of nearby wineries. From stunning views of the Monterey Bay to encounters with local wildlife, each visit promises a memorable experience, solidifying Soquel Vineyards’ place in the heart of California’s wine country.
